Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance occurs when the cells within fat, liver and muscle do not respond well to insulin production. This causes the pancreas to produce more insulin. Insulin resistance can be due to genetics or other lifestyle factors such as being overweight, history of gestational diabetes or heart disease, PCOS and metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes if left untreated. Insulin resistance can become more apparent as we age and go through the menopause and andropause.

Common symptoms:

Weight gain or struggling to lose weight despite good diet and exercise, increased abdominal fat, sugar cravings, hair loss or acne.

Treatment:

  • Nutrition and lifestyle advice

  • Insulin sensitising medication such as Metformin

  • HRT if appropriate
