Post Natal Depression (PND)

During and after pregnancy there can be hormone fluctuations which can alter how women feel in their mood. Post-natal depression affects 1 in every 10 women. After birth there is a sudden drop in hormone levels, especially progesterone.

Many women can feel a bit tearful and anxious in the first few weeks after giving birth and this can be normal and is termed ‘baby blues’. It should not last more than 2 weeks. If the symptoms last longer or are more severe then this could be post natal depression.

There are multiple causes such as previous history of PND or of mental health problems, lack of social support from family or friends, difficult relationship with a partner or general stressful living situation.

It is very important to get help immediately if you feel these symptoms either via your GP or health visitor, friends and family or 999/A&E if you concerned for the safety of yourself or the baby.

Progesterone in good doses can be a very effective way to manage post natal depression.

Common symptoms:

Anxiety, low mood, difficulty bonding with the baby or worrying thoughts about harming the baby, feelings of guilt and insomnia
