Thyroid Disorders

This refers to abnormal thyroid function. The thyroid gland is part of our endocrine system and is situated in the neck. It controls our metabolism. The thyroid gland can become both overactive and underactive. Hyperthyroidism refers to an overactive thyroid gland and can be caused by Graves disease which is an autoimmune condition where the body produces antibodies against the thyroid gland. This usually requires referral to an endocrinologist.

Hypothyroidism refers to an underactive thyroid and can also be caused by an autoimmune condition such as Hashimoto’s disease or as we age our thyroid can become underactive. Hypothyroidism is usually treated with T4 which is Levothyroxine and T3, Liothyronine, is also sometimes needed.

A full thyroid blood test to look at TSH, Free T4, Free T3 and antibodies is needed.

Common symptoms:

Hyperthyroid (overactive) - palpitations, tremor, weight loss, irregular periods, hair loss, irritability

Hypothyroid (underactive)- fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation, irregular periods, hair loss, eyebrows falling out, weight gain, depression

Treatment:

  • Treatment for hyperthyroidism involves referral to an Endocrinologist

  • Treatment for hypothyroidism is with Thyroxine (T4) +/- Liothyronine (T3)
